The limits of social networking

Social networking has been a huge revolution in the internet world. With the advent of the first networks and the further development of the concept thanks to Facebook and Twitter, connecting with users from all around the world is something easy nowadays. But is this true?

The truth about reaching audience
If you think about it, currently existing social networks are great publishing platforms. They allow users to post their statuses, their pictures, etc. They allow people to share their favorite websites, video games and many other things. It is incredible the amount of information and content that is shared and created everyday. Think about the millions of tweets sent and the gazillions of status updates that people post on the main social networks. This is a clear manifestation of the desire of people to connect with each others.

Sure, connecting with people is much easier today than it was fifty years ago or even five years ago. I still remember the difficulty I had in the late nineties to find someone who shard my same passion for Three’s Company, one of the best TV show on the planet. I think I found someone on some obscure mailing list and then I started sharing some emails with her. If I think about social networking today, I believe it would be much easier to find someone sharing my same passion. I would just type “three’s company” on the Twitter search box and I would immediately find tons of other fans and I could easily tweet them and connect with them.

While maybe the task of connecting with other users for someone who is searching info may be simple, connecting is much harder for someone who is posting content. Users can update their status on Facebook and their update will be displayed on the newsfeed of their friends. But users will not have the certainty that their friends will read their status update, when it may have been literally submerged by tons of other friends’ status updates. Users can post messages on Twitter but unless they are Lady Gaga, they will struggle to find followers and they will never know if their tweets have really reached someone.

Reaching audience is still extremely difficult and even nowadays, when we have the feeling that everyone is connected, this connection does not really allow such easy reaching of other users.
